Hykeem Jamaal Carter Jr. known by his stage name “Baby Keem” is an American rapper, songwriter and record producer who was born on 0ctober 22, 2000 in Carson, California but raised in Las Vegas, Nevada. He has produced for notable artistes like SchoolBoy Q, Jay Rock, Beyonce among others. He started gaining attention in 2018 with his projects “Hearts and Darts” and “The Sound of Bad Habit. He got even more attention with his 2019 mixtape “DIE FOR MY BITCH”and his breakout single “ORANGE SODA” which went platinum. He is signed to PGLang and Columbia records.

With Keem signing with Columbia Records and PGLang in 2020, he released The Melodic Blue in 2021, which was well-received by critics and fans alike. This album won the Grammy award for “Best Rap Performance” and its final single “Family ties” was certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). He earned two Grammy nominations for his collaborations with Kanye West on Donda and Kendrick Lamar on “Mr.Morale and the Big Steppers (2022).

In an  2021 interview with Apple Music Keem spoke about how he adopted his name “Baby Keem”, he stated that:

“It started with me hearing a beat from someone I was a fan of for a long, long, long time — Cardo, and when I heard the beat, I had a newfound confidence, I just felt like calling myself “Baby Keem”. I always joke around like “this is my name”, I always make fake nicknames for myself and things like that but, when I heard that beat it just sounded right, so I made a song called “Baby Keem”. After that that’s what it was”.

Hykeem Jamaal Carter Jr. popularly known as Baby Keem is an American rapper, songwriter and record producer. He was born on October 22, 2000 in Carson, California but raised in Las Vegas, Nevada where he found his love for music. Unfortunately, information about Baby Keem’s mother and father remains scarce. Likewise, not much is known about his siblings. However, he is the cousin of famous American Rapper Kendrick Lamar whom he has collaborated with on a lot of tracks.

His early years were spent in music studios, watching his aunts and uncles burn CDs using LimeWire, when he was as young as four years old. During his time living in Las Vegas during the winter months of 2009, Carter recalled listening to Kanye West’s album, “808s & Heartbreak,” on the  radio.                    When Carter heard that, it sparked his interest in music a whole lot. In 2010, Carter began researching music and he studied artists like Kanye West, Kid Cudi, Lil Wayne, Eminem, and 50 Cent. During the following year, Carter started pursuing his own musical career, a dream he has been harbouring since he was a kid. In order to release his solo mixtapes, Keem worked closely with American record producer Cardo, releasing “the Sound of a Bad Habit” (2018) and “Die For My Bitch” (2019). The visual mission statement for Kendrick Lamar and Dave Free’s company PGLang featured Keem in March 2020.  XXL’s 2020 Annual Freshman Class was announced in August 2020, and Baby Keem was featured in it.

During the second half of 2020, Keem returned with the release of two new tracks: “Hooligan” and “Sons & Critics Freestyle”. On March 5, 2021, Keem released the single “No Sense.” Then on April 30, Keem released an additional track on his record, “Durag Activity”, along with rapper Travis Scott who is another American rapper. It was followed by a subsequent collab with Kendrick Lamar on August 27, 2021, entitled “Family Ties”. A debut studio album by Keem named “The Melodic Blue” was released on September 10, 2021, and it features these songs. As part of the album, Keem also performed the single “Issues” on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. He also collaborated with American singer Don Toliver on the track “Cocoa”, as well as previously teased tracks “Vent” and “Range Brothers” as well. In addition, Keem appeared on Kanye West’s tenth studio album Donda in the song “Praise God” alongside Travis Scott, which he wrote and produced himself. As part of his collaboration with Kendrick Lamar, Keem won the Grammy Award for Best Rap Performance in 2022 for the song “Family Ties”.  The deluxe edition of “The Melodic Blue” was released on October, 2022.  On May 30, 2023, Keem and Lamar released the surprise single “The Hillbillies” and a music video for the song on May 30, 2023.
