Scott attended R.B. Stall High School all the way to graduation. Between 1983 and 1984, he attended Presbyterian College on a scholarship that was partially based on his performance on the football team.

It was in 1988 when he graduated from Charleston Southern University with a Bachelor of Science degree in political science.

Scott attributes his decision to work in government to the experiences he had while participating in the Palmetto Boys State program in South Carolina, of which he is a graduate.

After completing his education, Scott went on to pursue careers in the insurance and financial advisory industries. His business is called Tim Scott Allstate, and it is an insurance company.

Since 2013, Scott has served as the junior senator for South Carolina in the United States Senate. In 2013, Republican Governor Nikki Haley appointed Scott to serve in the Senate. Scott was selected for this position by Governor Haley.

Following his victory in a special election in 2014, he was able to maintain his position and was subsequently elected to full terms in 2016 and 2022.

Before being elected to the Senate in 2013, Scott represented the first congressional district of South Carolina in the United States House of Representatives from the years 2011 until 2013.

Before then, he had previously held positions on the Charleston County council from 1995 to 2009 and in the South Carolina General Assembly for one term (from 2009 to 2011). Before beginning his career in politics, Scott was employed in the financial services industry.

Scott is one of 11 African-Americans who have served in the United States Senate. He holds the distinction of being the first African-American to have held office in both chambers of Congress.

He is the seventh African-American to be elected to the Senate and the fourth Republican to be elected to the Senate.

He is the first African-American senator to be elected from South Carolina, the first African-American senator to be elected from the South since 1881 (four years after the end of Reconstruction), and the first Republican African-American senator since Edward Brooke left office in 1979. He is also the first African-American senator in the United States.

According to a story that was published near the end of 2022, a number of senators, including John Barrasso, John Cornyn, and Joni Ernst, allegedly encouraged Scott to run for president of the United States in the election that would take place in 2024.

It was rumored that Scott was preparing to launch his presidential campaign in February of 2023. He made the announcement about a “listening tour” that will commence with a Black History Month event in Charleston, South Carolina, and will then continue with lectures and events throughout the state of Iowa, which will be the first state to cast ballots in the 2024 Republican presidential primary.

In addition to Scott, a number of other known and possible candidates for the Republican nomination staged rallies concurrently in Iowa. On April 12, 2023, Scott initiated the formation of an exploratory committee with the intention of perhaps running for president in the future.
