HOW TO PREPARE ALPLERMAGRONEN.

Alplermagronen, also known as Swiss Alpine macaroni, is a hearty dish typically made with pasta, potatoes, cheese, and onions. It’s a comforting and filling meal, perfect after a day of outdoor activities in the Swiss Alps. Here’s a traditional recipe to prepare Alplermagronen:

Ingredients:

  • 250g macaroni or other short pasta (such as penne or fusilli)
  • 2-3 potatoes, peeled and diced
  • 1 large onion, finely chopped
  • 200g Swiss cheese (such as Gruyère or Emmental), grated
  • 200ml milk
  • 2-3 tablespoons butter
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • Optional: fried onions or crispy bacon bits for garnish

Instructions:

  1. Cook the Pasta and Potatoes:
  • In a large pot of salted boiling water, cook the pasta according to package instructions until al dente.
  • In another pot of boiling water, cook the diced potatoes until tender, about 10-15 minutes. Drain and set aside.
  1. Prepare the Onions:
  • While the pasta and potatoes are cooking, melt 1 tablespoon of butter in a large frying pan over medium heat. Add the finely chopped onion and sauté until translucent and lightly caramelized, about 5-7 minutes. Set aside.
  1. Combine Pasta, Potatoes, Cheese, and Onions:
  • Once the pasta and potatoes are cooked and drained, return them to the pot.
  • Add the grated cheese and milk to the pot with the pasta and potatoes. Stir over low heat until the cheese is melted and the mixture is creamy.
  • Stir in the sautéed onions. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  1. Serve:
  • Transfer the Alplermagronen to a serving dish or individual plates.
  • Optionally, garnish with fried onions or crispy bacon bits for extra flavor and texture.

Tips:

  • Cheese: Authentic Alplermagronen often uses Swiss cheeses like Gruyère or Emmental, known for their melting properties and rich flavor.
  • Creaminess: Adjust the amount of milk based on your desired creaminess. Add a little more if you prefer a creamier texture.
  • Variations: Some recipes include apple slices or tomato slices as additional garnishes or additions to the dish.

Enjoy your homemade Alplermagronen, a delicious taste of Swiss comfort food!
